In the early 1970s, a major fire burned into Long Beach, California, destroying hundreds of homes and overwhelming the capacity of the existing airtanker fleet. In response, Congress created the Modular Airborne Firefighting System program, known as MAFFS. The MAFFS program provides emergency support when additional large airtankers are needed to augment the commercial airtankers. The tank system is installed on an Air National Guard or Reserve Lockeed C-130 aircraft. The Legacy MAFFS design was a pressurized tank carrying 2,700 gallons of retardant. The Legacy MAFFS were in use for 30 years. MAFFS II is the next generation Airborne Firefighting System for the four Airlift Wings that provide support in this mission. The improved MAFFS II carries 3,000 gallons of retardant and replaces the Legacy MAFFS on a one for one basis.
