While forest managers recognize the need for biomass reduction and forest restoration, little is known about the economic trade-offs for alternative methods that reduce biomass.

Matzka and Kellogg are constructing a model that will allow forest managers to compare many options and enhance their ability to make sound economic decisions.  This model was tested using data from production studies in the Blue Mountains of northeast Oregon.

• The model compares biomass reduction techniques under various stand, operational and market conditions.
• The model takes into consideration variables such as percent pulpwood versus saw logs, harvesting methods and costs, and biomass quantities and removal.
• Different attributes can be varied to determine conditions that will make an operation feasible.  Many options and combinations can be investigated.
