The goal of the Seventh Biennial USDA Forest Service Remote Sensing Applications Conference is to provide a forum for resource managers and specialists to share information and experiences regarding practical applications of remote sensing and related technologies. Over the years this conference has evolved and expanded to include the participation of personnel from throughout the Forest Service. Additional attendance has included personnel from other federal, state and local land management agencies, as well as universities, the private sector, and many other interested parties.

In 1998 we are looking forward to a rewarding partnership with our co-sponsor the  Arthur Temple College of Forestry, Stephen F. Austin State University, Texas. Dr. R. Scott Beasley will be coordinating much of the on-site logistics for the conference. The proceedings will be published by the American Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing (ASPRS). ASPRS has performed an outstanding job of producing the Conference Proceedings for our past conferences. Each attendee will receive a copy of the proceedings as part of the registration fee.

RS '98 will convene in the Clear Lake, Texas area at the Nassau Bay Hilton and Marina, adjacent to NASA's Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center and will feature a tour of the space center. We are informed that the STS-90 space shuttle mission is scheduled during this time period. Nassau Bay is located approximately 25 miles southeast of downtown Houston, and just north of Galveston. The entire Nassau Bay area hosts an abundance of recreation, dining and entertainment opportunities.

The program for RS 98 will include paper presentations, poster sessions, and vendor exhibits. Additionally, for those Forest Service personnel and any other interested parties, demonstrations and clinics will be provided to orient FS personnel to the capabilities of the latest Forest Service procurement of image processing hardware and software.
