Conference Announcement and Call for Papers

USDA Forest Service

Eighth Biennial Remote Sensing Applications Conference

April 10-14, 2000

Albuquerque, New Mexico

"Remote Sensing and Geospatial Technologies for the New Millenium"

General

The USDA Forest Service is pleased to announce RS 2000, the Eighth Biennial Remote Sensing Applications Conference. RS 2000 will be held in Albuquerque, New Mexico, the week of April 10th, 2000. The area offers much to attendees in the way of after-hours activities as well as a relaxing venue for renewal of old acquaintances and formation of new partnerships. Papers and posters for all phases of remote sensing used in land management activities will be considered. For the year 2000 conference, we hope to emphasize remote sensing and geospatial projects in the Southwestern United States, but the conference is national in scope and all projects are welcome as abstract submittals.

Web Page

A web site is being developed for this conference. Watch for future updates to this site. The URL for the page will be:

Objectives

The objectives of the conference are to:

* Provide a forum for people interested in remote sensing and natural resource applications to share experiences and ideas and learn more about the latest remote sensing technologies

* Review the latest remote sensing, image processing, and geospatial technologies and their application for ecosystem management

* Publish conference proceedings that document technical presentations and poster displays

Conference Location, Format And Registration

The conference will be held at the Radisson Carlisle, 2500 Carlisle NE, Albuquerque, New Mexico. Plenary sessions will take place in the Ballroom 1 which is the main hotel meeting facility. Poster displays and vendor exhibits will be located in the Ballrooms 3, 4, and 5. The organizing committee is working on an outdoor field trip and banquet for the conference.

As part of RS 2000, a separate poster and vendor interactive session is planned. Individuals who submit posters will be available during this time slot to describe their remote sensing projects and interact with attendees. Vendors will have the opportunity to display the latest in remote sensing and geospatial technology throughout the conference, but this special late afternoon session will provide a time for all to attend.

The cost of attending the conference will be $195.00. This registration fee is being collected to cover the cost of publishing the conference proceedings for each participant, providing refreshments, the field trip, an evening banquet, and also for the use of conference facilities and equipment. The conference proceedings will be published in cooperation with the American Society of Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing (ASPRS).

Registration materials and the conference agenda will be distributed in early 2000 and this information will be posted on our web page as it becomes available.

Call for Papers and Posters

Papers and posters on topics related to the conference theme are invited.

Topics include:

* The use of standard and nonstandard aerial photography

* The use of satellite imagery such as SPOT, LANDSAT, IRS, and others

* The use of airborne electro-optical remote sensing systems such as airborne video, digital
camera systems, infrared scanners or imagers (FLIR systems), LIDAR, RADAR, passive RF imaging and multispectral/hyperspectral scanners

* The use of Global Positioning Systems (GPS)

* Image processing and methods for incorporating resource data from remote sensing
systems into GIS

* Advanced accuracy assessment techniques

Abstracts

Abstracts should be no more than 150 words in length. Each abstract must identify the proposal as either a paper for presentation or a poster display.

Abstracts are due November 12, 1999. The final selection of papers and posters will be made by December 3, 1999.

Send abstracts via e-mail (preferred) to: gshaw/wo_rsac@fs.fed.us or via fax to (801) 975-3478.

Hard copy abstracts may be mailed to:

Sponsorship

The conference is being co-sponsored by the USDA Forest Service's Remote Sensing Applications Center and the University of New Mexico’s Earth Data Analysis Center (EDAC). EDAC will be handling the conference registration fees which will simplify the process for out-of-agency attendees. The Forest Service’s Southwestern Region will be our hosts and we plan to showcase many successful remote sensing projects that have occurred in that Region.
