Field Measurements for the Training and Validation of Burn Severity Maps from Spaceborne Remotely Sensed Imagery

Principal Investigators:

  • Tom Bobbe, Mark Finco USDA Forest Service
  • Rob Sohlberg University of Maryland

    Description of Project:
This project supports the refinement and validation of a next generation of imagery-based, burn severity maps that are used by Burn Area Emergency Response (BAER) teams. Funds from the proposed project will be used to collect geo-referenced validating remote sensing classifications. Imagery for this project will come from satellites, which will make rapidly available imagery and imagery-derived products available to BAER teams. Processes have been already established to rapidly acquire MODIS, Landsat 5 and 7, and SPOT imagery at low to moderate cost.
