Why This Site?
This site provides a means for authors, reviewers, and other interested
parties to exchange ideas and help develop an "Ecological
Stewardship Framework" in 1996. We welcome your participation.
Objective
To develop the framework for the implementation of an ecosystem
approach on Federal lands and waters.
The framework will be published in a compendium publication that:
1) outlines the options and alternatives for implementing an ecologically-based
approach to the stewardship of Federal lands and waters; and 2)
documents the scientific foundation for those options and alternatives.
A workshop was held in Tucson, Arizona, December 4-14 to begin
the process. The workshop serves as a foundation for an ongoing
effort. It is one piece of the larger picture. The workshop is
not an end point, but rather a beginning.
Key Points
- The vision of the final product is a clear scientific framework
for ecologically-based stewardship approaches in general.
- The framework will outline guidelines and options for applications
in common situations and lay out key questions or information
that managers and agencies ought to consider or assess in relation
to resources at certain scales.
- The framework will be published in book form and will be a
compendium of the papers that synthesize the available scientific
basis and that develop the management options and alternatives
for implementing an ecologically-based approach to stewardship
in the field.
- The framework and related information are not intended to
provide prescriptive solutions for individual sites or places
but will provide the foundation for the development of agency
implementation plans and strategies.
Tentative Timeline
- Jan - Mar.....Interact with authors about section outlines
and preliminary drafts.
- Apr - Jun.....Review and comment on first substantive drafts.
- Beyond........Continue to exchange ideas, share implementation
experiences, etc. TBD.

belonging to us. When we see land as a community to which we belong,
we may begin to use it with love and respect." ALDO LEOPOLD
