FEIS Tutorial FEIS Home

This tutorial is designed to show you the capabilities of FEIS and illustrate several ways to find information through its new interface (http://www.feis-crs.org/beta/). If you can answer these questions, you can navigate FEIS successfully.  Go to the link at the bottom of FEIS’ online Tutorial page for the answers.

To find species reviews in FEIS, either
A. Enter the species name (scientific or common) in the FEIS search window, or
B. Use the search criteria to find reviews on species meeting particular criteria.

1. Suppose you need information on the Clark's nutcracker. Use the search engine on the FEIS Home Page to find the Clark's nutcracker species review. Who wrote it?________________________ What year was this review written? __________________

2.Look at the Table of Contents in the Clark's nutcracker review, where it says "Distribution and occurrence." Click on that link. Does the Clark's nutcracker occur in Idaho? _______________

3. In what 3 National Forests has prescribed fire been used in improve Clark's nutcracker habitat? (In the "Fire Effects and Use" section, use your browser's "edit-find" command and search for "National Forest".)

7. Go back to the Home Page and choose the option to search for species reviews by life form.

8. Go back to the Home Page and choose the option to search for species reviews by life form and invasiveness. 9. Return to the Search page and select criteria to get a list of species reviews on native tree species in South Dakota. To find fire studies in FEIS, select the “Search for Fire Studies” link on the FEIS homepage, then either
A. Search by species name (scientific or common) in the FEIS search window, or
B. Search by geographic area.

13. Use the search engine to find fire studies that include data for Snake River phlox. Where was the study located?__________________ What was the date of the fire? ______________ Was is a wildfire or a prescribed fire?__________________ Was the cover of Snake River phlox significantly different between burned and unburned plots in the third postfire year?__________

14. Use the search engine to find fire studies that include data on red raspberry. How many fire studies are there? _____ Open the Research Project Summary listed in the results. 16. Suppose you are planning a prescribed fire in plains rough fescue grassland vegetation near Glacier National Park and you want to see if any fire studies have been conducted in the area. Find a list of fire studies conducted within a 50-mile radius of Kalispell. Find the Research Project Summary from plains rough fescue prairie. Go to the second table under "Fire Effects on Plant Community". What season of burning resulted in the greatest cover of plains rough fescue? _________________ What was the date of this burn (see Fire Season/Severity)? ___________ What season and date of burning resulted in the greatest cover of Kentucky bluegrass? _________________
