Boy Scout Jamboree

August 1, 2010

Forest Service Volunteer Fred Smith from Oregon stands in a sea of Boy Scouts and throws Forest Service patch to the eager crowd before the BSA 100th anniversary celebration.

On Saturday night President Obama sent a video message to the scouts congratulating them on their 100th birthday and thanking them for the community services they perform. He encouraged the future leaders to continue the fine traditions of scouting and added the nation continues to needs their help. The President was followed by an outstanding multifaceted show that ended in spectacular fireworks.

The Boy Scout organization put on a great birthday party to celebrate their 100 year anniversary.

A day after the celebration of a century for the Boy Scouts of America the National Jamboree is in full swing again. Scouts enjoyed activities ranging from scuba diving to repelling and biking to canoeing.

A spectacular fireworks display was part of the centennial celebration of the Boy Scouts at their National Jamboree in Virginia.

Forest Service volunteer Cody Baker from Fairview, North Carolina works at the Jamboree National Forest during the day and participated in the Boy Scouts’ Order of the Arrow POW -Wow in the evenings. Cody is a champion straight dancer, which can be described as a men’s style of traditional Native American dance.

Cody works various venues within the Jamboree National Forest teaching scouts about natural resource conservation and is an escort for Smokey Bear as he walks about the Jamboree grounds spreading his fire prevention message.
