Rapid Response Fire Project 2002
Progress to Date (December 2002)
Most of the first year was spent constructing equipment, recruiting
and training the rapid response crews, and testing the fire behavior
equipment. Our rapid response team (crews) was recruited from
fire staff from various agencies and to date we have half from the
National Park Service and half from the US Forest Service.
We held several training sessions including time trials for the
field measurements and safety analysis and mitigation measure development
with single resource bosses. We tested the field equipment
several times.
We successfully interacted with two Incident Management Teams (IMT’s)
on two fires during 2002. We tested the fire behavior video equipment
on the White Wolf Wildland Use Fire in Yosemite National Park. [View

an IMT and it went smoothly. The second IMT interaction was with
the Cone Fire on the Lassen National Forest. While the fire was
contained before we were able to set-up equipment, we formally interacted
with the Type II IMT, following operational procedures for our operation
on fires.
We have presented the project at several venues to date and are
planning on additional presentations. This included at the
California Fuels Committee Meeting, the Fire Conference in San Diego
and at several US Forest Service fire training events. We
also provided briefings at the fires we attended.
